Book Reading at Moe’s in Berkeley: The Icelandic Cure

I’ll be reading an excerpt from my sci-fi chapbook The Icelandic Cure (winner of the 2016 Omnidawn Fabulist Fiction contest) at Moe’s in Berkeley this Friday (March 30th), alongside some fine poets. The event is a combined book release party for Omnidawn Publishing’s Spring 2018 releases.

Here’s the Facebook event page. The event starts at 7pm. Moe’s Books is at 2476 Telegraph Ave, in Berkeley.

If you’re in the East Bay or can get there easily, I hope you join us. No cover charge, and there will be food!

If you’d like to preorder the entire 2018 Omnidawn line, here’s a link to the half-price preorder page. Good for just a few more days.

I’ve really enjoyed working with Rusty Morrison, Ken Keegan, Gillian Hamel, and the other folks at Omnidawn. In particular the interior layout of the book is exceptionally good–many thanks to Gillian.

Writing Update

I just received edits from Flame Tree Publishing for The Sky Woman, which is scheduled to come out later this year (exact date TBD). My reaction at the moment is this is actually happening! I’m supposed to have edits returned in two weeks, which will be a challenge, but this is the life I signed up for.

I have one story in the pipeline: Targeted Behavior was purchased by Compelling Science Fiction. Release date TBD.

I have four other stories out for submission (The Archivist, Off Limits, The Sacramento Sea, and The Grown, The Born, and the Big-Eyes).

In terms of new work, I’ve started a new novel, working title Strange States, with a target quota of 500 words/weekday. However I may take a break from that project to complete revisions on the sequel to The Sky Woman, which Flame Tree has requested to see.

It’s enormously satisfying to finally be publishing stories that I’ve worked on for  months, and I imagine that feeling will be amplified when my first novel is released. It’s especially gratifying to get direct feedback from readers (such as on Twitter) who have enjoyed reading my stories.

Hi JD-CONGRATULATIONS on all of your well-earned, well-deserved success!! I would LOVE to meet you Friday in Berkeley, but although I live in Sonoma County, the drive and time is a bit much for me. Maybe next time?

First or second-time commenter, long time reader. I thoroughly enjoy your self-explorations and your perspective. It validates my wandering, meandering journey to self and encourages me to keep on striving, searching.
