Jondi & Spesh "Church"

LQ-1141_800

After a somewhat quiet period in terms of new releases, Spesh and I are getting our groove on. This release, Church, is part two of a triptych. Part one was Cycle Three, and Part three (My Kicks) will come out later this summer.

I would say the sound is closer to progressive house than tech house (we released it under the latter), but “progressive” these days means giant builds, 128bpm, bees in a jar sounds (in other words close to what used to be trance, but is now the sound of EMD appreciated by 14-20 year olds). That’s cool, I’m not fighting it, I’m flowing with it!

This one is deep and modern, on the minimalist side. If you like it, please buy it — remember its okay to spend a little money on music even though you can get it for free. 😉

The excellent remixes come courtesy of Bristol’s own Mariana, and Castletown’s Steve McGrath.

New Jondi & Spesh Release — Cycle Three

I’ve got a new release out today on Beatport with my longtime music collaborator and business partner DJ Spesh. I don’t ask for donations or have a “tip jar” on this blog, but I always appreciate track purchases. Many thanks!

How To Stay Relevant as an Artist (What to Do When They Try to Put You in the Cupboard)

Try not to end up in here.

Try not to end up in here.

My first dance single came out in 1992 (DJ JD — “1-900”). I was 22 years old. My most recent dance single came out last Wednesday (Yellowcake and Kevin Knapp — Oh Yuki/Waterfall). My dance music career is old enough to legally order a drink at a bar.

At the beginning of your artistic career, the challenge is to make enough noise to be recognized at all. A couple decades later, if you’ve had any success at all, the challenge is to stay out of the cupboard.

Let me explain.

Loöq Records End-of-Year Compilation, and Contest

Top 12 of 2012 (on 12-12-12)

Top 12 of 2012 (on 12-12-12)

A quick post to let you know about what I’ve been up to over at Loöq Records. Every year we listen to every single track we’ve released and come up with a “best-of-the-best” compilation. It’s available exclusively on Beatport at the moment, and if you buy it (or even just buy one track) you’re eligible to enter the Loöq Records contest.

If you have no interest in electronic music, then read no further. But if that 808 kick gives you that special feeling, I promise you’ll find something you like on this collection. Some of my own work is on it (Jondi & Spesh, Momu, Yellowcake) but my favorite tracks this year are from RND().

Contest rules and prize details are right here. I’ll say this much — everyone is a winner!

New Music Videos from Momu, Grimes

A couple more music videos to share today. One of our own (Momu – Rising), directed by Kia Simon. We got up at 3am to make that first sunrise shot. There was a French guy sleeping in the bushes when we got there (Muir Beach). He had a really nice bicycle and full camping gear … some kind of “explore America on a budget” trip I guess. You can buy the album over there on the right (cover art by LEBO).

The second video is by Canadian artist Grimes (Claire Boucher). I like it — mostly because it has lots of medieval weapons in it. Musically, there are incredibly interesting production elements. Stylistically there is a visual melange of Burning Man, hipster-homeless, Britney Spears, Ren Faire, and general LA trashiness. But Grimes is for real. She sailed down the Mississippi on a houseboat, with chickens and a typewriter, reading Mark Twain. Eating only potatoes. Cheers to Grimes.
